The Office of International Programs (OIP) has worked with Transport Canada on specific programs for furthering implementation of the Memorandum of Cooperation that was signed by both countries in 2000. Through discussions, the Border Technology Exchange Program (BTEP) model was extended to the U.S.-Canada border. Modeled on the Local and Tribal Technology Assistance Program (LTAP/TTAP), BTEP has been successfully implemented in Washington State and Alaska.

OIP participates in the Transportation Border Working Group (TBWG), collaboration between the United States and Canada on border-wide transportation initiatives. TBWG subcommittees presently are working to finalize a Border Information Flow Architecture to enhance border technology interoperability, and to update a Border Infrastructure Compendium that compiles descriptive information, and infrastructure needs, for the busiest Canada–U.S. land border ports of entry.
